One Portlander to Another

There's no war in Portland. One former military member to all current military personnel: if you're expecting something exciting, don't come. This will be the most boring deployment of your life.

I live here. Nothing is happening in the streets, unless you count the bikers. No, not the motorcycle gangs—we don’t have those. I’m talking about the literal bicycle riders. Which reminds me of one of my favorite exchanges from Ship of Fools:

Rieber: Lowenthal, you know it is a historical fact that the Jews are the basis of our misfortunes.

Lowenthal: Of course.

Rieber: You agree?

Lowenthal: Of course. The Jews and the bicycle riders.

Rieber: The bicycle riders? Why the bicycle riders?\

Lowenthal: Why the Jews?

But that’s an aside, though perhaps something to think about. The fact is, we’ve been misrepresented. The most you’ll see here is a drum circle, and maybe you might develop a taste for kombucha. That’s about it. I mean, come if that’s what you’re looking for. And some killer indie music. And honestly, the burlesque shows are top-notch anywhere in the country. The food is pluralist, translation: delicious. Lots of farm-to-table, too.

So I guess, do come. But bring an appetite and a drum if you have one. If not, we’ll lend you one…though we may also insist that you try out hot yoga.

You got this, fierce warrior!
