When I was growing up, I lived on Gilchrist Street, just across Texas Avenue from Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University (Texas A&M). The 4-H club was a massive part of our culture, and all students in the public school system knew how to farm; many worked on family farms during the summer and breaks. The significance of agriculture to Texas culture can’t be overstated.
Due to the policies of the current federal executive branch, which has not been reigned in or hindered by the requisite Senate and House oversight, Texas has seen raids similar to all other states. Workers on farms, in the hotel and restaurant industries, etc., have all been targeted by federal enforcement of the current administration’s invalid interpretation of immigration law. The result?
According to multiple sources, nearly 100% of the Texas agricultural workforce (i.e., pickers and harvesters) have not shown up for work. This is a problem not just for this year, but for at least one more year into the future.
